POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A fireworks explosion Sunday night injured three boys near McNair Park in Pompano Beach, authorities said.
Pompano Beach spokeswoman Sandra King said firefighters were called at about 7 p.m. Sunday after the boys were injured in a neighborhood near the intersection of Northwest 27th Avenue and Ninth Court.
Witnesses said the boys tried to set off a firework when something went wrong.
"I heard like a loud boom," Marcus Stirling, who lives in the area, said. "I heard a lot of people yelling and screaming. We came up the corner and just heard the kids."
King said the victims are 8, 9 and 11.
She said one of the children lost his hand, another lost fingers and the third suffered burns to his face and chest.
King said two of the boys are brothers.
"I grabbed them and sat them on the ground (and told them), 'Be still,'" Sabrina Stirling said. "And the hand of one of the little boys was just dangling, dangling -- hanging by the skin."
Paramedics took the victims by ambulance to Broward Health Medical Center.
Their conditions have not been released.
