Woman accused of leaving child in shopping cart while trying to steal groceries

Asia Griffin, 26, returns later for child, deputies say

TAMARAC, Fla. – A South Florida woman was arrested Monday after she left a child in a Publix shopping cart after she was caught trying to steal groceries, authorities said.

The incident was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Publix at 4121 W. Commercial Blvd. in Tamarac.

According to an arrest report, the store manager told deputies that two females tried to leave the store with a cart full of groceries that hadn't been paid for.

Deputies said the manager grabbed the cart and the thieves fled the store, but left the child behind in the cart.

Asia Griffin, 26, allegedly returned to the store while deputies were there and identified her relationship to the child, which was redacted from the arrest report.

Authorities said she also identified her accomplice, whose identity was also redacted from the report.

Deputies said the suspects are accused of trying to steal $192.65 worth of groceries.

The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras, the arrest report said.

Griffin was arrested on charges of petit theft and child neglect.
