Spirit Airlines flight lands in Fort Lauderdale after reports of odor in cockpit

Pilot asked for expedited landing out of abundance of caution, airline says

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Spirit Airlines flight landed safely Monday afternoon at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after reports of an odor in the cockpit.

There were 148 people aboard flight 244 from Guatemala City, an FLL spokesman said.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said authorities initially responded to a report of smoke in the cockpit, but there was no smoke to be found when firefighters checked the plane.

Spirit Airlines spokesman Paul Berry said many times when passengers believe they are seeing smoke, it is actually vapor or condensation from the air-conditioning unit.

He said the odor was contained to only the cockpit and the pilot asked for an expedited landing out an abundance of caution.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said the crew aboard the Airbus A319 reported ventilation issues in the cockpit shortly before landing at 4:30 p.m. and put on oxygen masks.

Jachles said authorities are investigating the incident. It's unclear from where the odor came.
