The body of federal prosecutor Beranton J. Whisenant Jr. was found May 24 on the beach in Hollywood.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A federal prosecutor who was found dead on a South Florida beach earlier this year fatally shot himself, police have ruled.

Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said Thursday that detectives have concluded their investigation into the death of Beranton J. Whisenant Jr.

Whisenant worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami. His body was found May 24 by a passerby on the beach near the water.

Grossman said detectives and the medical examiner determined that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Whisenant's manner of death was ruled a suicide.
