Zoo Miami mourns loss of African elephant

Lisa, who arrived at zoo in April 2016, dies

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Zoo Miami staff is mourning the death of Lisa, a 44-year-old African elephant that died Tuesday.

Lisa, who arrived at the zoo from Virginia in April 2016, died shortly after lying down on her side in the elephant barn.

The zoo says there are no obvious causes of death at this time. Lisa had been under observation since July when she was found lying down in the barn and needed assistance getting back on her feet.

Officials say a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Lisa was one of the zoo's "Golden Girls," a group of elephants all over the age of 40.
