MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Authorities closed an area of the beach at 53rd Street and Collins Avenue Wednesday after the Florida Department of Health deemed the water unsafe.

Before closing the beach, authorities determined two water samples had high bacteria levels that according to the report "may pose an increased risk of illness."

Health officials identified the bacteria as enterococci, organisms used to determine fecal contamination during recreational water quality standard tests.
