FIU garage on main campus reopens after threat investigation

Bomb squad leaves building after investigating suspicious package

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A suspicious package forced the evacuation of a garage on the main campus of Florida International University on Thursday. The garage reopened about 7:30 p.m.

The Blue Garage on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus was closed for about three hours. The Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue bomb squad investigated a suspicious package.

"Evacuate Blue Garage. Everyone stay away until further notice. Police Activity," the alert to students said.

Florida International University was co-hosting an event at the Jewish Museum of Florida Thursday evening to commemorate the Balfour Declaration, a 1917 statement by the British supporting the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine.

The Consultate General of Israel was forced to cancel the event at the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach due to threats. Authorities didn't say if the investigation at FIU's main campus was related to the threats reported.
