Wounded Allapattah barbershop owner who fatally shot man claims self-defense

Cooperstown Barber Shop remains closed Friday

MIAMI – Serban Beriguete, the owner of the Cooperstown Barber Shop in Miami's Allapattah neighborhood, was recovering Friday at Jackson Memorial Hospital after he was stabbed at his business.

Relatives said Beriguete, 44, pulled out a gun and fatally shot the man he said attacked him about 11 a.m. Thursday.

Jennefer Beriguete said witnesses told her that an angry former client stormed into the barber shop and stabbed her father.

"My dad defended himself by shooting him," she said. "The guy had come in. He had a switchblade or a razor in his pocket when he came in."

People who work in the shopping plaza were shocked to hear about the incident.

"Everybody here is in shock. Everybody is like, 'What?' You know, he was the owner of the place. He's a very, very nice guy," Pepe Diaz, who works next door, said.

Diaz said he's even had his hair cut by the owner before.

"I think it was his father that came here and screaming at the gym and said, 'They killed my son. They killed my son.' So the girl that works here with customers -- they went out and checked it out, but when they got there, they see the guy on the floor," Diaz said.

The man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity hasn't been released as police attempt to notify family members.

Serban Beriguete was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be treated for his stab wounds.

The owner's wife, Melany Beriguete, said she rushed to the hospital after learning what happened.

Police are still investigating the incident.

Detectives were asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
