NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A body was discovered Tuesday morning inside a car that caught fire at a North Lauderdale park.
Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said deputies were called to a vehicle fire at Bicentennial Park about 5 a.m.
Oglesby said after firefighters extinguished the flames, authorities found the body of a male inside the car.
A view from Sky 10 showed the charred car with its doors and trunk open. An ax could be seen on the ground nearby.
A North Lauderdale woman who lives nearby told Local 10 News that she was awakened about 5 a.m. by the sound of gunfire.
"We started listening and then soon after heard a few more," she said.
Detectives are now investigating the death as a homicide.
The victim was identified Wednesday as Darren Butler, 27.
Neighbors said the park is typically a hangout spot for teens and young adults at night.
Anyone with information about the death is asked to call Detective Kevin Forsberg at 954-421-4200 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is offered for information that leads to an arrest.
