3 teens accused of robbing man in Miami Beach, taking off in victim's car

Police say suspects initially ran from officers

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Three teenagers were arrested Tuesday after they robbed a man in Miami Beach and took off in his car, authorities said.

According to an arrest report, the trio spotted the victim about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday as he was sitting in his 2003 Volkswagen Jetta in the area of 314 72nd St.

Police said the suspects, Austin Fernandez, 18, Juan Mena, 18, and Joseph Torres, 17, forced the victim out of his car, demanded his watch and phone and took off in his car.

Police said Mena was unable to get in the back seat because the door was locked and Torres and Fernandez drove away without him.

Authorities said the trio met up later in the night and were caught by police driving around in the victim's car.

According to the suspects' arrest reports, the trio ran from the car after spotting officers, but were eventually apprehended.

Police said the trio confessed to the carjacking and identified themselves in surveillance photos taken at the scene of the carjacking.

The teens face charges of armed carjacking and robbery with a deadly weapon.
