Boy accused of crashing neighbor's stolen car gets 21 days of home detention

11-year-old declines to speak about last week's crash in Pompano Beach

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – An 11-year-old boy accused of stealing a car and crashing it in Pompano Beach appeared before a judge Monday morning.

The boy stood next to his mother in court as the judge sentenced him to 21 days of home detention with an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said the boy stole his disabled neighbor's car last week and crashed it into a fence on Northwest 13th Street.

Deputies said the boy abandoned the car after the crash and ran to Charles R. Drew Elementary School, where staff members called his mother.

The boy was arrested on charges of grand theft and leaving the scene of a crash.

Deputies said the boy showed them where he left the car, also leaving the keys inside.

Neither the boy nor his mother wanted to talk about what happened as they left the courthouse.

Another court date has been scheduled for next month.
