Teen killed, another injured in Airport Expressway crash

Passenger's arm amputated at scene

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla.

A teenage driver was killed and another had his arm amputated after a crash early Wednesday on the Airport Expressway.

The crash happened about 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Airport Expressway near Northwest 27th Avenue.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Sanchez said a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the BMW was speeding when it struck the guardrail.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A yellow tarp covered the body, which was still inside the car as it was towed away.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, a 14-year-old boy in the car had to have his arm amputated at the scene. The boy was then taken to Jackson Memorial's Ryder Trauma Center.

The boy's father identified him as Clifton Patterson Jr.

"One of the teenagers was able to walk away with minor injuries," Sanchez said.

All lanes reopened about 9 a.m.
