FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – A police detective shot and killed an armed man Wednesday after a fight inside a Florida City apartment, authorities said.
Miami-Dade police spokesman Lee Cowart said two Florida City police detectives were questioning the man just before 1 p.m. when a confrontation ensued inside the apartment in the 1400 block of Northwest Second Avenue.
During the struggle, one of the detectives shot the man, who was armed with a gun, Cowart said. Family members identified the victim as Juvon Simon, 23, of Florida City.
Cowart said Miami-Dade police officers found the gun inside the apartment and took it into evidence. He said the detective, who was not identified, is a 33-year-old three-year veteran of the Florida City Police Department.
The Miami-Dade Police Department is handling the investigation because the county's law enforcement agency conducts the Florida City Police Department's police-involved shootings.
Simon's mother told reporters that her son had just woken up and taken a shower shortly before he was shot.
"As soon as he [got] out, I heard the gunshot," Youseline Simon said.
No other injuries were reported.
Juvon Simon's relatives said he had a history with the detective.
"Every time he got arrested, the charges dropped because ... he's harassing him," Juvon Simon's sister, Lucy Simon, said.
"He wanted to kill him," Youseline Simon added.
Police have not confirmed whether Juvon Simon and the detective were known to one another.
