Unattended suitcase in front Miami police station raises alarm

Several streets shut down as bomb squad investigated

MIAMI – A suspicious package was found Wednesday afternoon outside the Miami police station in downtown Miami, shutting down the surrounding area for several hours.

However, police eventually determined that the package was just large suitcase left unattended.

"All it contained was personal belongings," Miami police Officer Kenia Fallat said.

The bomb squad detonated the suitcase as a precaution.

Northwest Second Avenue was closed between Third and Fifth streets as the bomb squad investigated the contents of the suitcase.

Because of the investigation, Miami-Dade Transit officials said service was affected on routes 2, 7, 21, 51, 207, 208, and 27.

The false alarm came a day after the Miami-Dade County family courthouse and the Florida Department of Children and Families building in downtown Miami were evacuated Tuesday afternoon because of bomb threats.

Police said the threats were a hoax.
