Bicyclist struck and killed by driver in Davie, authorities say

Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in crash

DAVIE, Fla. – A bicyclist was killed and two people were seriously hurt Friday in a crash in Davie, authorities said.

Sgt. Mark Leone, a spokesman for the Davie Police Department, said Ismael Quiles III, 33, was driving in the 4200 block of Davie Road just after 5:30 p.m. when his black Dodge struck the bicyclist, 48-year-old Paul Bramer. Quiles' car continued moving and eventually slammed into the back of a pickup truck and flipped over, Leone said.

Witnesses on the scene told Local 10 that Quiles bailed out of his car and attempted to flee on foot, but a group of bystanders tackled the man to the ground. However, Leone disputed the witnesses' account.

"There has been no indication that the driver fled or attempted to flee. He was lying next to his vehicle when the police arrived," Leone said.

Leone said speed and alcohol use were factors in the crash.

"The cops questioned (Quiles), and he was like, 'I don't know what happened,'" Leone said. "You could smell the alcohol on him. You could smell the alcohol when he was talking."

Paramedics pronounced Bramer dead at the scene. Quiles and the driver of the pickup truck were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. Their conditions were not disclosed.

Leone said police were still investigating the crash. Quiles has not been charged in connection with the crash.
