Massive fire burns at Miami-Dade metal recycling plant

Fire at Ferrous Processing & Trading Co. is second since July

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A massive fire was burning Wednesday morning in northwest Miami-Dade County.

The fire started after midnight at the Ferrous Processing & Trading Co. metal recycling plant and quickly grew.

Multiple crews from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were called to douse the flames.

"The most challenging part of this fire is having to tear down the pile," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Paul Estopinan said.

Heaps of hot metal created a complicated operation.

"It's a recycling plant," Estopinan said. "There's a lot of metal. We have to tear it down with large machinery."

Firefighters battled another fire at the plant in July.

The fire could be seen from the Airport Expressway, and smoke was reported as far west as Doral.

"We currently have all four sides of this fire contained," Estopinan said.

Authorities said the fire is now under control.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined. Estopinan said people in the area should remain indoors, especially if they have respiratory issues as smokey conditions in the area are expected to last all day.
