Pedestrian killed in car crash on Florida's Turnpike

Woman struck after trying to get garbage bin that fell into roadway

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A pedestrian was killed Tuesday morning in a car crash on Florida's Turnpike, authorities said.

According to Florida Highway Patrol Lt Alex Camacho, a landscaping truck lost part of its load around 9:30 a.m. and dropped a garbage bin onto the roadway near Northwest 199th Street.

Camacho said the driver walked into the roadway to get the garbage bin when a black Toyota Corolla crashed into the woman.

Camacho said the driver had tried to swerve to avoid hitting the woman, but wasn't able to avoid striking her. 

Sky 10 was above the scene at 10 a.m. The car involved in the crash had significant front-end damage, and a tarp covered the victim's body.

No other details were immediately released.
