Miami police officer involved in crash in Coral Gables

Witness spots woman running from scene of crash, police say

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A Miami police officer was involved in a car crash early Monday morning in Coral Gables.

The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 near Riviera Drive.

Local 10 News was at the scene as the marked police cruiser was stopped next to an overturned Kia.

"Very scary situation. You don't expect that," Coral Gables police Sgt. Tomas Salcedo said.

According to Coral Gables police, the driver of the Kia was traveling in the opposite direction of the Officer Alain Guerra's police cruiser around 2:45 a.m. when the driver somehow lost control and verred into oncoming traffic, striking the officer's car.

"Lost control and ended up on the other side, in the southbound lanes of the highway, where he struck a city of Miami police officer who was heading home," Salcedo said.

Guerra, who has been on the force for about 11 years, sustained a broken wrist and was taken to Doctors Hospital for treatment.

Police said officers arrived at the scene to find the Kia abadoned, but at least one witness told officers he or she spotted a woman running away from the scene.

Police said the woman was taken into custody for questioning.

Southbound and northbound lanes of U.S. 1 were closed for hours after the collision; however, all lanes reopened by 6:30 a.m.
