Officers search for boat thefts' suspect after chase in Sweetwater

Driver rammed car into police car injuring officer's arm before chase

SWEETWATER, Fla. – An investigation into boat thefts on Thursday left a Doral Police Department police officer injured and two men in Miami-Dade County jail on Thursday.

An officer, who was not identified, was helping Miami-Dade Police Department detectives when he ordered a driver to stop about 6 a.m. at Northwest 107th Avenue and 14th Street, according to Doral Police Officer Rey Valdes.

Instead of following the order, the driver "deliverately backed up and rammed the officer's patrol car" before he turned to speed away, Valdes said, adding the officer suffered an injury to his right arm.

There was a chase. Valdes said three men decided to abandon the car at Northwest 110th Avenue and Northwest 12th Street in Sweetwater. A woman remained inside the car. Valdes said officers quickly caught up to the driver identified as Alexander Hernandez.

The two other men ran away. With the help of a Miami-Dade Police Department helicopter and police dogs, officers arrested Alfredo Llanes about 8:50 a.m., Valdes said.

Officers from Miami-Dade, Sweetwater, Miami Springs and Florida International University police departments searched for the third suspect, but he got away.

Hernandez and Alfredo Llanes, both 41 years old, are facing charges of fleeing and eluding police, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest without violence.
