Gunman killed, police officer wounded in Miami-Dade County

Shooting happened after man was spotted with shotgun, bulletproof vest

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A police officer was shot and a man armed with a shotgun was killed in a shootout Saturday afternoon in northeast Miami-Dade County, authorities said.

Freddie Ramirez, deputy director of the Miami-Dade County Police Department, said county officers were assisting the North Miami Police Department when the man was spotted walking in a bulletproof vest and carrying a shotgun around 3 p.m. near Northeast Second Avenue and Northeast 119th Terrace.

Authorities said attempts were made to negotiate with the man, which resulted in shots being fired.

Ramirez said the gunman was killed and the Miami-Dade County police officer was shot in the lower body. He did not describe what led to the shooting or say how the officer was wounded.

Paramedics rushed the officer to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

"We're very relieved that it looks like he's going to have a full recovery," Ramirez said.

Ramirez did not identify the officer or the man who was killed.

Because the incident was a police-involving shooting, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation. FDLE said it recovered the shotgun and the bulletproof vest from the man who was killed.
