Deputies said the victim, Joseph Duran, 55, was walking across the westbound lanes of East Atlantic Boulevard when he was struck by the truck that was heading west.

"The driver's side front bumper, fender and headlight assembly struck the pedestrian, projecting his body more than 40 feet away from the point of impact," the Broward Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Witnesses said the driver slowed down after the crash, but then accelerated and fled west from the scene.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel pronounced Duran dead at the scene.

Detectives said the truck would have damage to the driver's side front end: the headlight assembly, front bumper and possibly the hood.
