Woman injured after wooden awning separates from rest of building

MIAMI – A woman was injured Tuesday afternoon in a partial building collapse in Miami, authorities said.

Miami police said the incident occurred at 1150 SW First Ave.

A photo shows Miami Fire Rescue crews at the scene. The building appeared to be vacant and under renovation.

Police said Southwest 12th Avenue was shut down between First and Second streets after the incident. People were asked to avoid the area.

It's unclear what led to the wooden awning separating from the rest of the building.

Authorities said a building inspector is looking into whether the owner had the proper permits in place before beginning renovations on the building.

"We understand that they were doing some renovations and some demolition. Now, if they were focusing their efforts on that overhang and how much effort was being put into whatever work was trying to be done is what we are trying to determine," Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.

The extent of the victim's injuries wasn't immediately clear.
