Unknown vehicle fled scene after crash, troopers say

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A moped rider was killed early Sunday in a hit-and-run crash along Interstate 95 in Dania Beach, authorities said.

Lt. Alvaro Feola, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol, said the 36-year-old rider from Erie, Pennsylvania, was traveling along the highway between Griffin and Stirling roads around 1:30 a.m. when an unknown vehicle struck his moped from behind.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop to help the moped rider, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was a violent wreck, with one tire splitting off the moped. The victim was thrown from the moped and was knocked out of his shoes. The victim will not be identified until his family is notified, Feola said.

The crash remains under investigation, Feola said.

At dawn, the medical examiner’s office removed the victim’s body from the roadway while a flatbed truck towed the moped, which came to rest on the shoulder.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
