DORAL — Matthew Castillo will be leaving his post as Miami Springs police chief to take over the Doral Police Department in about 13 days, city officials announced on Thursday.
Castillo, 42, who is replacing former Chief Edwin Lopez, starts his new job on June 15, before a formal swearing-in ceremony on June 17, according to the city’s announcement.
Doral Mayor Christi Fraga released a statement saying Castillo will be “combining proactive policing, modern technology, and meaningful community engagement to drive real results.”
Fraga announced Lopez’s departure on May 11 after his hire as Miami’s new police chief to lead over 1,100 sworn police officers. Doral has about 190 sworn police officers.
In a statement, Zeida Sardiñas, Doral’s city manager, described Castillo as “a respected law enforcement leader in our region who understands our community and has worked alongside our department through prior collaboration.”
Castillo started his career with the Miami Springs Police Department as a public service aide in 2009. The Florida International University graduate moved up the ranks and was promoted to chief on Jan. 1, 2025.
Miami Springs, a city department with more than 45 sworn police officers, had yet to announce Castillo’s replacement.
