3 Miami men convicted of cargo theft in Georgia

Thieves face up to 20 years in prison

DALTON, GA. – Three men from Miami were convicted Tuesday of cargo theft by a jury in Georgia under the state's new cargo theft statute.

Yosvani Cordero, 42, Yoandy Linares-Machado, 32, and Alexander Rodriguez-Moreno, 37, face between 5 and 20 years in prison when they are sentenced, and fines between $150,000 and $1 million, based on the value of the cargo.

Police said the men stole an 18-wheeler on Interstate 75 on Nov. 23, 2014.

The trailer contained about $150,000 worth of batteries, authorities said.

Police said the Miami-Dade Cargo Theft Task Force and the GBI Major Theft Unit identified stolen property connected to the case in Florida and connected the three men to the theft of the vehicle and its cargo.

The men are being held in jail as they await sentencing on May 18. They are believed to be the first defendants convicted in Georgia under the new statute.
