6 arrested with armfuls of shoe boxes in Fort Lauderdale Foot Locker break-in

Suspected burglars triggered alarm, police say

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Six people were taken into custody after an early morning break-in at a Fort Lauderdale Foot Locker.

Local 10 News was the only South Florida news station at the scene as the suspects were loaded into patrol cars Wednesday.

Police said the group triggered an alarm when they broke in through a back door and attempted to go on an illegal shopping spree.

When officers arrived at the store near West Sunrise Boulevard and Northwest 10th Avenue, they found the suspected burglars with armfuls of shoe boxes.

The first suspects arrested were Tamarya Gray, 34, Torrence Hayes, 22, and a third person. Each were arrested on pre-existing warrants and are not facing charges related to the burglary at this time.

Police said K-9 officers helped track down two other people, Derrick Hamilton, 42, and Walter Atwell, 34, who were each arrested on charges of grand theft and burglary.

A third suspect, James Greene, 42, was found hiding behind a dumpster, authorities said. He was also arrested on charges of grand theft and burglary.

Police also recovered several pairs of shoes near the dumpster as well as burglary tools.

About $5,300 worth of shoes and apparel were recovered near the store.

Detectives said they were attempting to contact the manager of the store to review surveillance video.
