70-foot boat leaks fuel while sinking in Fort Lauderdale canal

Owner not on boat at time, authorities say

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 70-foot cabin cruiser leaked fuel Friday morning while it began sinking in a canal in Fort Lauderdale, authorities said.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials said people who live near 95 Fiesta Way saw the boat earlier in the morning before it suddenly began sinking.

Authorities said a 55-gallon drum of waste fuel is leaking from the boat.

A fireboat responded to the scene to try to contain the leak.

Sea Tow was also called in to attempt to pull the boat upright.

The U.S. Coast Guard has also been called for assistance.

Authorities said the boat is believed to be between 30 and 50 years old.

The owner was not on the boat when it began sinking, authorities said.
