MIRAMAR, Fla. - Nine people were recognized Tuesday for helping Miramar police arrest a woman last month who is accused of hitting a pedestrian and then fleeing the scene.

"I was enraged when I saw the lady on the floor," Ramon Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez is one of the people who witnessed the gray Infiniti driven by Jessica Crane, 39, jump a curb May 7 at the intersection of South University Drive and Pembroke road, striking Michelle James, who was pregnant, along with her two small children.

People who witnessed the crash rushed over to help James while they waited for paramedics.

Several other people decided to chase Crane and blocked her car in almost a mile-and-a-half away near Knolls Road and Miramar Parkway.

Rodriguez and others got Crane out of the car and took her keys so she couldn't leave.

"I was just thinking, 'She died. We got to catch the lady,'" Rodriguez said.

James lost her baby, and is still receiving medical attention.

The witness received recognition from Miramar police, who said they hope others learn from their actions.
