Brothers injured during home invasion in southwest Miami-Dade

Items also stolen from neighbor's home

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A home invasion was reported Monday morning in southwest Miami-Dade, police said.

Miami-Dade police spokesman Detective Daniel Ferrin said officers were called to a home in the area of Southwest 281st Terrace and 141st Place about 8:30 a.m.

According to detectives, a family of five lives in the home, but only two were home at the time of the invasion.

Police said two brothers, ages 15 and 19, were home alone sleeping when one of them heard a commotion in the living room.

The older brother, Alfredo "Freddy" Gallegos, went to see what was happening and was attacked by one of the robbers who was armed with a  pipe, police said.

"As he was being beaten, he yelled for his 15 brother," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said. "The brother came out of the bedroom to help out, and that's when he was struck by another subject over the head several times."

Alexis Gallegos heard his sibling screaming for help and ran into the living room. Police said he was attacked by another robber, who beat the teenager over the head with a "blunt object."

"I have to go see my boys," Martha Martinez said in Spanish after she learned of what happened to her sons.

The robbers left the home with jewelry and other items, Zabaleta said.

"It is a bloody scene inside that residence, so it goes to show how violent these two individuals are," Zabaleta said.

Officers told Local 10 News that both robbers were wearing bandanas over their heads to conceal their identities.

The brothers were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. They each are now listed in stable condition.

A woman who lives next door to the family said the thieves also ransacked her home, stealing a laptop and her TV.

Police said they saw a man leaving the woman's home as they were investigating the first home invasion and took him into custody.

They said the man, whose identity has not been released, had an out-of-state warrant and local warrant unrelated to Monday's incidents.

"I don't own weapons," Imandra Pupo told Local 10 News reporter Michael Seiden. "Tonight, as soon as I'm done here, I'm going to go buy one."

Detectives said it's unclear whether the man was involved in the first home invasion.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
