Broward County Public Schools names top teacher of the year

Top principal, assistant principal, school-related employee also named

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Broward County Public Schools announced its top teacher, principal, assistant principal and school-related employee of the year at the annual Caliber Awards Ceremony on Tuesday.

Held at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, the event was attended by over 1,300 of the finalists and honorees' peers, colleagues, family, friends and well-wishers.

Evelyn Schwartz from Oakridge Elementary School was named the 2013 Teacher of the Year on Tuesday.

As a veteran teacher of almost 19 years, the school system said Schwartz is the kind of teacher who sees a need and makes a plan to get it met.

For the last 12 years, BCPS said Schwartz has focused on inspiring and encouraging her first grade students to achieve at their highest levels.

Schwartz said her goal is for her students to be in an engaged, positive, safe environment where they can view school as a place where they can learn and contribute to the world around them.

Brian Kingsley from Gulfstream Middle School was named the 2013 Principal of the Year. With 15 years of education experience, three as principal of Gulfstream Middle School, BCPS said his commitment to his students and the community is outstanding.

From Flamingo Elementary School, JoAnne Misiewicz-Seltzer was named the 2013 Assistant Principal of the Year by BCPS. As an educator for 17 years, Misiewicz-Seltzer has designed several staff development opportunities for teachers and teacher assistants and is a major team player to her peers, her community, her students and their parents.

BCPS announced Tuesday that Krystal Morman, a community liaison from McNicol Middle School, is the 2013 School-Related Employee of the Year. Morman said she had many plans for her life, and though they haven't all gone as planned, she wouldn't have it any other way.

"I finally realized that what I need would be far greater than what I want," said Morman, "that sometimes the plan that destiny has for you is far better than any plan you can ever have for yourself."
