BSO deputy arrested on multiple drug charges, leaving scene of crash

Santiago Mayorga suspended with pay

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was arrested Tuesday morning on several drug-related charges and has since been suspended with pay.

Deputy Santiago Felipe Mayorga, who was hired in April 2015, was involved in a hit-and-run crash in his marked patrol vehicle while exiting Interstate 95 at Copans Road, according to an arrest report.

The other driver, Penny Reynolds, followed the 22-year-old deputy when he fled the scene.

"He didn't stop," Reynolds said.

Reynolds then called her mother and told her to write down the numbers on the patrol vehicle.

"She told me, 'Well, call 911,' and I said, 'I'm going to, but just write these numbers down,'" Reynolds said.

Mayorga was later located by BSO  internal affairs Sgt. Aledmar Rengifo at a residence in Pompano Beach.

Upon arriving at the residence, Rengifo looked through a window and noticed drug paraphernalia and a bag containing marijuana in the living room, the arrest report said.

A search of the residence revealed 21 grams of marijuana, six grams of Adderall and 10 hits of LSD, which were sitting on top of Mayorga's passport, the report said. Smoking devices were also found throughout the home.

A marijuana grinder containing marijuana residue was  found in the center console of Mayorga's patrol vehicle, the report said, and a cigarette wrapper containing a chalky unknown substance was found on the passenger seat.

After being read his rights, Mayorga said he'd been driving from a friend's house when he  exited I-95 at Copans Road between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., which was the time of the crash. He also admitted to knowledge of the narcotics, the report said.

Mayorga was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis, possession of amphetamine, possession of LSD, possession of drug paraphernalia and leaving the scene of a crash.

Reynolds' car remains damaged from the crash. The paint is chipped and a rim was scratched.

Her mother, Midzi Lindberg, said she was scared when she got the call about the incident.

"I was shook up and scared because I wasn't sure what happened," Lindberg said.
