FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Six jurors who were questioned Wednesday by a Broward County judge about a deputy who had contacted one of the jurors on Facebook said the incident did not impact their decision in the case of convicted rapist Dobie Hunter.
Broward County Sheriff's Office Deputy Ray Shelton found himself facing reprimand last week after a juror came forward, saying she was uncomfortable that Shelton had sent her a "wave" emoji on Facebook messenger.
The incident brought up concerns that a mistrial could be declared in the case.
The judge said she wasn't ready to issue any ruling Wednesday on the matter, as she had jury selection in another case.
It's unclear when she will make a decision.
Shelton has not been relieved of duty.
The incident was reported last week after Hunter was found guilty of repeatedly raping a 16-year-old girl in 1985 in Fort Lauderdale.
Police said DNA evidence helped them arrest Hunter 32 years after the crime was committed.
Sitting in a wheelchair, Hunter apologized to the court after listening to the verdict.
"I just want to say I'm sorry," he said.
Hunter was sentenced to 30 years in prison for each count, which will be served at the same time.
