Cops help save lifeless girl

Hialeah Police officers drive 18-month-old girl, mother to Palmetto General Hospital

HIALEAH, Fla. - The Hialeah Police Department credits three of its officers with saving an 18-month-old girl who wasn't breathing.

Officer Gabriel Arojas was conducting a traffic stop at West 68th Street and 19th Avenue Thursday night when he heard people yelling and saw them pointing, say police. He called dispatched and requested backup for a disturbance.

"I started out as a traffic stop and it escalated," said Arojas. "I definitely will not look at a routine traffic stop the same way."

When he walked toward the crowd, Anisley Beltran approached him with her lifeless daughter in her arms and screamed, "Help me! She is not breathing!"

Beltran was driving her daughter Allison Perez to the hospital when the girl started convulsing.

"She looked in the back seat and saw the baby was foaming at the mouth and gone limp," said Arojas. "She had thrown it in to park and grabbed the child and saw my lights."

Arojas then called dispatch back and asked for rescue.

"Alright, we got a child, she's not breathing. I need a rescue en route," Arojas told dispatch in a call released Friday. "We got a child not breathing and I need fire rescue. 'Are you on the roadway?' I am on the roadway but the child is in and out of consciousness. She is burning up with fever. She is hot to the touch."

Beltran can be heard screaming in the background.

Officers Yunior Pinedo and Azel Acay arrived about the same time Arojas called dispatch back.

Instead of waiting for rescue, Pinedo and Acay drove Perez and Beltran to Palmetto General Hospital.

Police say Perez had a high fever and may have fainted. She was released from the hospital a few hours later.

"She was saying thank you a lot but it was choked up thank yous. It made me feel good that she was able to say thank you," said Arojas.
