1 killed, 1 injured in shooting near Fort Lauderdale

Surviving victim taken to Broward Health Medical Center

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – One man was killed and another man was injured early Thursday after being shot outside a home near Fort Lauderdale, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting was reported just after 1:30 a.m. at 2561 NW Ninth St.

"It's something you don't expect to see. So, it's unusual," one neighbor, Mel Brimm, said.

A woman whose daughter lives next door told Local 10 News that her daughter is now frightened to live in the area.

"Obviously, she's very nervous right now, very shaken up," Tomechia Kemp said. "It's kind of startling to, you know, to have this to happen."

Sky 10 was above the scene after the shooting as authorities towed away one car that had bullet holes in it.

BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said one victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified later in the day as Isac Powell, 39.

The surviving victim was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. His condition has not yet been released.

His mother identified her son as Derrick Carn. She said Powell was his best friend.

"He's a very sweet person, giving, loving," the woman said. "I don't know why anybody would want to shoot him, and then they killed his best friend, that was horrible. If anybody seen anything, please, please, contact the police, please. Thank you."

Neighbors said Carn lives at the home where the shooting took place.

"It happened right next door to my daughter, so I did let my daughter know to let the victim's mother know that I do have them in my prayers," Kemp said.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

Homicide detectives are investigating.
