17-year-old Hialeah student arrested in after-school stabbing

Fight outside Wendy's leads to stabbing

HIALEAH, Fla. – When a group of teens armed with knives and bats were threatening his friend, Eduardo Antonio Rivero was brave. But it cost him.

As the 18-year-old ran to his friend's aid, Yosiris Alfonso Fernandez confronted him with a knife on Wednesday afternoon.

The teens were outside of a Wendy's fast-food restaurant at 46. E. 49th St., where Hialeah High School students often meet to socialize after school.

Fernandez, 17, grabbed a pocket knife and used it to stab Rivero on his lower back, according to a Hialeah police report.

The other teens fled in a silver Honda Accord and stopped at a nearby McDonald's at 4300 E. Fourth Ave. When Hialeah police officers confronted them, they were quick to point to Fernandez, who later turned himself in with his father by his side.

With police officers' access to surveillance video, Fernandez admitted to stabbing Rivero and throwing the knife away, an arrest report said. He was arrested on a charge of first-degree aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Meanwhile, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted Rivero to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he remained on Wednesday night.

Police said Rivero suffered a 4-inch puncture wound to his lower right back.
