Ashes have been returned

SWEETWATER, Fla. – Two people in Sweetwater have been arrested on accusations that they broke into several townhomes in a development right off Eighth  Street and across from Florida International University.

The burglaries happened earlier in the month.

In one of the break-ins, the thieves made off with a woman’s ashes and in another a passport preventing the victim from traveling to Cuba to visit her ailing mother, police said.

Meanwhile, the ashes were later dumped in a swamp.

"Those ashes have since been returned to the victim," Sweetwater police spokeswoman Sandy Antonio said. "He was very happy and pleased. He cried and was excited that he got his mom's ashes back, and we were happy to be able to give them back to him."

Jessica Casas, 35, and Yoandry Perez-Cabrera, 34, were arrested.

The pair may have targeted the homes after learning the residents were moving out, police said.
