FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Fort Lauderdale resident says his home was among those shot up Monday during a drive-by shooting that injured a 15-year-old girl.
"They hit the door, so the house felt like it was hit from the first gunshots, so I stayed down. I didn't want to move. It was terrifying," Lewomo Johnson said.
Johnson vividly recalled what Fort Lauderdale police are calling a drive-by shooting that injured a teen as she was sleeping in her bed.
"The one girl who got hit, and I am sorry she got hit, but there were numerous gunshots. Even after the first shots hit our door, there were numerous gunshots. Over 15 or 20," Johnson said.
Police said the teen was shot in her side.
"She is doing OK," the girl's mother said on her way to the hospital. "She had surgery, but she is doing OK. She came out of it."
Police said three homes in the Suncrest Court neighborhood were hit, including Johnson's door, which was riddled with four rounds.
"I was in the house and I was on the floor in the house. I didn't move until I saw the lights from the police come," Johnson said.
Police were back in the neighborhood Thursday with a mobile surveillance truck that was parked on the corner where the shooting occurred.
"I hope that the police do their job and hope they can find them," Johnson said.
That is a sentiment shared by Johnson's neighbors, who say gunshots in the neighborhood are becoming commonplace.
Police say they have very few leads and that witnesses who saw something need to say something so another child isn't hit.
"At all times, there are at least 30 children outside," Johnson said. "For someone to be randomly shooting like that -- that is not safe at all."
