70-year-old gas station manager shot in ear at Deerfield Beach store

Gunman flees in newer-model, silver sedan, deputies say

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – A 70-year-old man who works as a manager at a Mobil gas station in Deerfield Beach was shot in the ear last week during a confrontation inside the store, authorities said.

The shooting was reported Nov. 21 at the Mobil at 1200 W. Hillsboro Blvd.

According to an incident report, an employee who was working inside the convenience store at the time saw a man wearing a black hoodie and hat enter the store and walk to the back where the coolers are located.

She said she kept watching him because he was acting suspicious and she thought he was going to try to conceal a beer inside his hoodie.

Instead, she said she heard the man and her manager yelling at each other in the back office.

The woman told Broward sheriff's deputies that she ran to the office and saw the suspect and her manager engaged in a physical confrontation and saw that the suspect was holding a black handgun.

The woman told deputies that her manager was struggling to keep the gun away from him.

Deputies said the employee ran out of the store and heard a gunshot.

A man who was walking toward the store and a homeless man who was standing outside also said that they heard the gunshot.

Deputies said the victim was shot in the right ear. The bullet went through the back of his ear, just missing his head.

He was taken to Broward Health North to be treated and has since been released.

Witnesses told deputies that they saw the gunman leave in a newer-model, silver sedan.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
