PLANTATION, Fla. - An armed robber was fatally shot Tuesday night by one of three people who were hanging out at a park in Plantation, police said.

The shooting was reported just before 9:30 p.m. at the Plantation Multi-Cultural Park at 460 NW 43rd Ave.

Plantation police said three people were sitting in the park when they were approached by two males, who tried to engage them in conversation.

Police said the duo then tried to rob the three victims at gunpoint.

But one of the victims was armed with his own gun and shot the armed assailant, police said.

Detectives said the other robber fled the scene and the armed robber died just north of the crime scene.

"When it started to happen, I guess he pulled (out) his gun and shot one guy and the other guy got away, and the other guy died right there on Fifth Street," Chet Rockwood, who heard the gunshots, said.

The victim, who has a concealed weapons permit, was not injured.

The identity of the accused robber is being withheld until police can notify his relatives.

Police are still searching for the other robber, who is believed to be in his late teens or early 20s.

Anyone with information about his identity is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
