PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – An arrest has been made in the death of a Miami-Dade corrections officer, Pembroke Pines police confirmed Tuesday.
Brian Fairweather, 29, was arrested Tuesday and charged in connection with the death of Daveon Hall.
Hall, 40, was found dead Jan. 29 inside his Pembroke Pines home in the 1000 block of Southwest 122nd Avenue.
Fairweather is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder.
Broward County Crime Stoppers, the Dade County Police Benevolent Association and the Miami-Dade County mayor's office offered a collective reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
"He was happy. He was free-spirited, kind, respectful," Hall's mother, Barbara Drummond, said.
Drummond said that passion and positive spirit is what drove her only son to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Hall had been a Miami-Dade corrections officer since 2000.
"He also was a police officer because he took the test also and passed that, but I said, 'No, I think you should stay with corrections because I don't want you going on the street to get gunned down and all that,'" Drummond said.
Those fears would come true -- not on the job, but in Hall's own home.
Drummond said she got a call from her son's job Jan. 29 after he didn't show up for work.
"I called him and he didn't answer, you know, and I went to his apartment, and that's when I found him dead," she said.
Detectives said Fairweather ambushed Hall inside of his apartment at the gated complex where he lived. Police said Hall was found dead on his living room floor.
"That pain is actually worse than giving birth to him. It's like an endless pit," Hall said.
In the nearly three months that have passed since Hall's death, Drummond has used her pain as motivation to help start a foundation in her son's honor.
"That will be to mentor kids and to help kids whose parents have been gunned down," Drummond said.
A motive for the killing remains unclear, but investigators said there is no indication that Hall was targeted because of his connection to law enforcement.
"Someone who is just ruthless. Someone who is just horrible," Drummond said.
In addition to first-degree murder, Fairweather is also charged with possession of a fictitious driver's license and driving without a valid license.
