Authorities identify teen who fought with deputy at BurgerFi

Suspect's friend says deputy overreacted

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. ā€“ The Broward Sheriff's Office has identified a 17-year-old boy who they said got into an altercation with a deputy Monday night at a BurgerFi in Deerfield Beach.

Authorities said Bernardo Oliveira Cardosa Vieira is the teen seen on cellphone video being pepper sprayed by a deputy, who then tries to kick his legs out from under him.

Authorities said the two then got into a scuffle as the deputy tried to detain Vieira.

Vieira got away, and deputies have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Authorities said the teen faces three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence and disorderly conduct.

A friend of Vieira's who was at the restaurant that night said it was the deputy who overreacted and used excessive force.

"I would say the cop was assaulting him from my point of view, because I was three feet away from him," Taro Dehaan said.

Cellphone video newly obtained by Local 10 News shows how chaotic the situation appeared to become as the deputy attempted to arrest VieiraĀ while a crowd gathered.

"And then Bernardo gets up and starts running, and the cop tackles him,"Ā Dehaan said. "Then Bernardo gets up, punches him in the chest, or around here, and then he flees."

Deputies said they were initially called to the restaurant by management and were asked to remove an unruly customer when things spiraled out of control.

Authorities said the deputy was not injured.

Anyone with information about Vieira's whereabouts is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
