Boy, 7, struck by minivan in Miramar hit-and-run crash

Minivan owner comes forward; no arrests made

MIRAMAR, Fla. – A 7-year-old boy was struck Sunday morning by a minivan while riding his bicycle in Miramar, police said.

The hit-and-run crash occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Tropicana Street.

Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said the driver of an older-model green and silver minivan struck the boy named Jayden and sped away without stopping.

Surveillance video showed a Chevrolet Astro hitting the boy and then leaving the scene.

Rues said the owner of the minivan came forward Monday, but no arrests have been made.

"For someone to hit him and go home to their house, their family, not knowing if he was OK, like, are you even human?" Jayden's mother, Felissa McFarlane, said.

Rues said the minivan was seen turning north on Desoto Drive and was last seen traveling east on Pembroke Road.

Neighbors told Local 10 News reporter Neki Mohan that vehicles speeding in the neighborhood have been an issue.

Jayden was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

McFarlane said her son is lucky to be alive.

"I'm thankful to everybody because, you know, without this being on the news and the police reacting so quickly and doing what they're supposed to do and trained to do, who knows if that person would have (turned themselves) in?" McFarlane said.
