Police said the parking attendant walked toward the driver's side of the vehicle, motioning for the driver to stop.

Deputy Wendell Shepherd, 43, threw up his hands while speaking to the attendant, but the officer could not hear what was being said, the report said.

Police said the officer pulled up behind the vehicle with her police lights on and honked her horn.

Shepherd accelerated the vehicle, causing the parking attendant to jump out of the way, the report said.

Police said Shepherd turned left into the parking lot and jumped out, looking for something on the ground.

The police officer approached Shepherd, who told her, "My girl lost her phone."

The parking attendant approached the officer and told her that Shepherd ran over his foot and that he needed Fire Rescue.

Miami Fire Rescue responded to the scene and determined that the victim's ankle appeared to be broken.

Shepherd was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery with great bodily harm.

He has been suspended with pay from the Broward Sheriff's Office pending the outcome of the criminal case.

BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said Shepherd is a detention deputy who was hired by the department in October 2001.

Shepherd bonded out of jail early Monday.
