Community meeting to be held after controversial Miami-Dade police-involved shooting

Jamar Rollins, 21, shot Friday by Miami-Dade officers

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A community meeting will be held Tuesday night to discuss a deadly police-involved shooting in southwest Miami-Dade that's sparking outrage.

Newly released surveillance video shows a man running across the street about 7 p.m. Friday in the 10100 block of West Indigo Street.

Video shows an unmarked car with a flashing light driving through the area and making a U-turn.

Witnesses said bullets started flying moments later.

"Out the blue, you just hear, 'boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,'" one man said.

"You hear five shots ring out. We're thinking it's the kids shooting at the police officers, but it was the other way around," another man said.

Miami-Dade police said officers pulled over a car on West Indigo Street and the passenger took off running.

They said the driver, Jamar Rollins, 21, pulled out a handgun, forcing officers to shoot.

"This was not right. This was not done right," Rollins' aunt, Trithena Rollins, said.

Some people have a different account than police about how the shooting occurred.

"He (Rollins) got out the car with his hands up. He was surrendering already with his hands up," one man said.

"He was trying to put his hands up and get out the car," another witness said.

Frustrations and questions are also spreading on social media, causing Miami-Dade County Commissioner Dennis Moss to put together a public meeting, hoping to update and address the community's concerns.

"Justice. That's the only thing that he would want," Rollins' father, James, said. "Justice."

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church at 10701 SW 184th St. The meeting is open to the public.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
