Nearby shooting leads to lockdown at Coral Reef High School

School briefly placed on lockdown as precaution

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ A southwest Miami-Dade County high school was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after two people were shot nearby, Miami-Dade police said.

The victims, Richard Acosta, 31,Ā and Elena Maria Diaz, 27, were both taken to Jackson South Community Hospital in stable condition.

No arrests have been made as police continue to search for the shooter.

Diaz wasĀ found about 6:15 a.m. across the street from Coral Reef High School, but police saidĀ the shooting occurred at a location blocks away from the school.

"This is Richmond.Ā This is so quiet down this street," the victims'Ā friend, Marlita Montgomery, said.Ā

Authorities said aĀ school police officer was approached by Diaz after the shooting. Police found the man inside a black Ford Expedition at the original scene of the shooting on SouthwestĀ 102nd Avenue, just south of 152nd Street.

Both victims had been shot in the torso.Ā

Friends said that they believed Acosta was dating Diaz.Ā

"I just seen them last night and everything was good," Montgomery said.

Coral Reef and Richmond Heights Middle School were both placed on lockdown as a precaution, a Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman told Local 10 News. The lockdown was later lifted.

She said the lockdown was related to a non-school-related incident in the area.

"All students are safely being instructed in their classrooms under the supervision of their teachers," a message to parents said. "There is no current threat to any student in the school."

As the sun came up over the original scene, officers with their guns drawn and wearing bullet-proof vests approached a home.

Two people, an older man and a woman, were taken into custody.

It's unclear whether they will be charged in the shooting.Ā Ā

Neighbors told Local 10 News reporter Ian Margol that the house is for sale and the mother of the family that lives there died just a few days ago.Ā

Police originally closedĀ Southwest 100th to Southwest 104th avenues between Southwest 152nd and Southwest 153rd streets during the shooting investigation. Ā All roads have since reopened.

Anyone with further information about the shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.Ā
