Credit card skimmer found twice in recent months at Davie gas station

Skimmer removed by authorities Friday

DAVIE, Fla. – Authorities removed a credit card skimmer Friday from a gas station in Davie, and this isn't the first time the gas station has been targeted.

"Every other week, someone's posting on the Weston groups that they found another skimmer in these pumps," Jeremy Chase said.

Local 10 News was there Friday as the pump in question got serviced after yet another skimming device was found at the 7-Eleven at 4490 Weston Road in Davie.

An inspector from the Department of Agriculture found the device on Thursday.

Authorities said two devices were planted inside of pumps at the same gas station in June while a third was uncovered in March.

Now drivers are on alert.

"Overall, it makes me weary because, in general, the technology they are moving up with to steal people's information is incredible," Chase said.

Police agree that thieves are getting smarter.

"Now they've come up with devices that are Bluetooth enabled, where they can insert the device into the pump and be able to remotely access all of the information that that device obtained from people's credit cards and debit cards," Davie police Sgt. Mark Leone said.

The information is obtained from the magnetic strip off credit cards. Crooks then use that information to clone the cards or break into people's bank accounts to steal their money.

Police said people should pay in cash at gas stations, but if they need to use a card, it's safer to use a credit card.

"It's safer to pay with a credit card as opposed to a debit card," Leone said. "Another thing you can do is look at the device and see if it's been tampered with. You can check the integrity seal (and) make sure that seal hasn't been broken."
