MARATHON, Fla. - A drunk man stole a forklift Thursday night from a marina in Marathon after he couldn't find his car keys, authorities said.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said authorities were called to Marina Junction about 9 p.m. about someone breaking down the fence at the marina with a forklift.

The man who called authorities said he saw the suspect driving the forklift toward the Sandal Factory on Ocean Terrace.

A sergeant pulled over the man on 51st Street.

Herrin said Edward Quinton, 44, of Rhode Island, told deputies that he was in the Keys helping friends move and had lost his car keys.

He said he needed something to drive and knows how to drive a forklift, so he took it from the marina, Herrin said.

When deputies questioned Quinton about the damaged marina gates, authorities said he told them that "it was OK," and that he could fix the gates because he "was a genius."

Herrin said Quinton appeared to be intoxicated and his blood-alcohol level tested at more than twice the legal limit for operating a vehicle.

He was charged with DUI with property damage, criminal mischief, burglary and grand theft.
