Former 'Cocaine Cowboy' accused in interstate car fraud ring

Mickey Munday faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ A former "Cocaine Cowboy" is back in hot water with the feds.

Mickey Munday, who was one of the most notorious drug traffickers in South Florida in the 1980s, was arrested this week in connection with an interstate car fraud ring

Munday last spoke to Local 10 News about a vacant field beside his North Miami home that he had turned into a park for neighborhood children.

But long before that, Munday was well-known to investigators in South Florida as one of the notorious "Cocaine Cowboys".Ā

He spent most of the 1990s in prison for smuggling 10 tons of cocaine from Colombia to Miami.

Federal agents raided his home this week after officials indicted Munday in an interstate car fraud scheme along with seven other men.

Investigators said the scheme netted more than $1.6 million.

According to an arrest affidavit from the Secret Service, Munday and the others stockpiled cars through "straw buyers" between September 2008 and February 2015.

Authorities said they bought cars at extreme discounts from people struggling to pay their loans or, on some occasions, stole the vehicles.

The cars were moved from Missouri to Florida, hidden from the rightful lien holders and sold for profit, authorities said.

Munday and the others arrested were expected to make their first appearances Friday in Miami federal court.

If convicted, each man faces up to 20 years in prison as well as a $250,000 fine and restitution for each count of the 14-count indictment.

Munday has not returned calls from Local 10 News.
