MIAMI – A former Miami-Dade police officer was arrested Tuesday, accused of submitting fraudulent paperwork in order to take military leave.
William Weaver faces two counts of official misconduct and one count of grand theft.
According to an arrest warrant, Weaver submitted phony paperwork requesting military leave while employed with the Miami-Dade Police Department so that he could obtain more than $2,000 from his employer.
Weaver was a reservist with the Florida Army National Guard, but he was already discharged in September 2015 when he submitted what turned out to be fake military orders showing his scheduled deployment at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, Miami-Dade police Sgt. Yolanda Jacinthe wrote in the warrant.
When Weaver's lieutenant called the Department of Military Affairs to confirm the orders, he learned that Weaver had been discharged in October 2012, the warrant said.
During a search of Weaver's personnel file, Lt. Eugenio Fernandez discovered that Weaver also submitted bogus military orders in July 2015, the warrant said.
The Miami-Dade Police Department paid Weaver $2,253.98 for time he was supposed to have spent as a reservist.
"He's a former police officer and had an opportunity to take leave time, but instead he invented himself as a military guy who could take company time on his own time," Miami-Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle told Local 10 News.
Weaver was being held on $15,000 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
"In uniform or out of the uniform, no one is above the law," Fernandez Rundle said.
Wever's arraignment is scheduled for next month.
