HIALEAH, Fla. - A Miami man was arrested Monday after stealing about $40,000 worth of jewelry from an apartment in Hialeah, authorities said.

According to an arrest report, a woman left her apartment shortly after 10 a.m. Nov. 8 when her husband called her and said that their security cameras were showing two men burglarizing their home.

Police said the woman returned to the apartment and saw one man walking away from her apartment with her safe in his hand and another still inside.

Police said the burglars were startled by the victim and fled in different directions.

The woman told police that the safe contained about $40,000 in jewelry.

Police said the woman identified Jorge Pita, 58, in a 6-photo lineup as the man who she saw leaving her apartment with her safe.

He was arrested Monday on charges of burglary and grand theft.

Police said Pita refused to speak with detectives without an attorney present.

The second burglar has not been arrested.
